Research Ethics and Guidelines

Ethical Guidelines For Researchers

  • Research aims should contribute to the good of society
  • Research participants must voluntarily consent to research participation
  • Researchers should avoid, prevent or minimize harm to others in the widest sense
  • The physical, mental and social well-being of the participant should be promoted
  • Everyone involved in a project should be treated fairly
  • Informed consent should be taken from participants before study
  • Researchers should take precautions to protect confidentiality of participants and data
  • Researcher should declare any conflicts of interest
  • Researcher should properly cite the ideas and work of others

Avoid:
  • Fabrication: Making up research data
  • Falsification: Manipulation of existing research data
  • Plagiarism: Act of passing of somebody else’s ideas, thoughts, pictures, theories, words, or stories as your own

​Citation

Citing is imperative for anything that is not your own, original thought and for facts that are not common knowledge.
Why to Cite?
  • Protects intellectual property rights
  • Ensures the accuracy of scientific and scholarly knowledge
  • Enables others to follow the progression of knowledge over time on specific topic
  • Provides support to the idea and evidence for content
  • For prevention of plagiarism, which is a serious crime
Citation Style
Citation content can vary depending on the type of source and may include: Book: author(s), book title, publisher, date of publication, and page number(s) if appropriate. Journal: author(s), article title, journal title, date of publication, and page number(s).
